Commissions

As an Orthodox Christian artist, my work flows from a deep love of our God, Scripture and the timeless beauty found within its sacred pages. Through my work, I seek to bring the people, Saints, and messages of our Christian faith to life.

Each piece is crafted through prayer, love, and reverence. My work unfolds slowly and intentionally, often taking several months to complete. This unhurried process allows me to honour every detail and create art that invites meaningful, prayerful contemplation.

With a background in formal fine art training, I bring a deep commitment to draftsmanship, and material quality. Alongside my fine art practice, I have spent the last two years immersed in the practice and traditional study of iconography, honouring the historic methods and spiritual weight of the Orthodox tradition.

OIL PAINTINGS

I paint portraits in oils on canvas or archival boards. Commissioned work, portraits of Clergy, Saints etc. These are not icons, they are portraits or fine art.  The smallest size for commissions would be 9x12 inches.

If you represent a Church, Monastery, or Orthodox organization, I warmly invite you to reach out.

ICONS & LARGER WORKS

Icons can be painted with egg tempera and pigments or with acrylics.  There is no equal to the look and feel of an icon done with egg tempera. I prefer egg tempera however, it does require more time to create and cure.  If there are time constrains, I will use an acrylic binder with pigments to create my own acrylic paints.

Process

I will either prepare the board or order one from a professional icon board maker. Boards are sealed and stained, linen cloth is applied to the face of the board and then many layers of RSG and whiting are applied thinly. In between each application, the board is sanded and the final product is a beautiful white silky, smooth surface on which the icon is painted. The whole process takes several weeks. For acrylic painted icons, an acrylic gesso is used instead of RSG and whiting.

If gold or silver leaf is applied to the icon board, this process also takes at least a day to complete.

Painting an icon cannot be rushed, it is a prayerful and detailed process that requires time.  Each layer of egg tempera must dry before the next layer is applied.

Once the icon is complete, it needs time to dry and cure.  Then, the final step is to seal it with a protective coating.

Small Icons

The minimum icon size for commissions is 6x8 inches, this smaller canvas is beautifully suited for portrait-style icons, showcasing intimate, close-up depictions (head and shoulders) of Christ, the Theotokos, or the Saints.

Pricing and Turnaround time

Because every icon is a unique, pricing is tailored entirely to the specific scope of your project. Turnaround time will depend on what projects I am currently working on and the complexity and size of the icon. Prices can range from $350 CAD and up. The timeline for completion reflects the complexity of the design, the size of the board, and my current studio schedule. To give each piece the focus and care it deserves while balancing multiple active projects, the current turnaround time for icons will range from 2-6 months. This includes creation and curing.  Egg tempera must cure and harden for at least 3 months before it is ready to be sealed. Icons created with acrylics will have less curing time required.
